GRIT Athlete Development • The Gym @ Forries

Train better.
Play better.

Youth athletic development, now running full school terms.

GRIT is about developing stronger, faster, more powerful and more confident young athletes — while building the movement skills, training habits and mindset that transfer directly into their chosen sport.

athletic development

More than youth training

GRIT continues to grow, and we're incredibly proud of the program and environment we're building.

Our goal has always been to provide more than simply a hard workout. GRIT develops each athlete's speed, strength, power, agility, movement quality and overall athletic ability — alongside the training habits and mindset that carry into sport and beyond.

As GRIT continues to evolve, we're making some changes to the structure of the program.

New structure

Moving to a school term program

GRIT now runs in line with the NSW school terms, rather than our previous 6-week blocks. Depending on the school calendar, each GRIT term runs for approximately 9, 10 or 11 weeks.

Greater consistency

A full-term structure lets our coaches provide greater consistency, rather than continually restarting shorter training blocks.

Progressive programs

Training builds week on week across the whole term, so athletes progress through a genuine program — not a series of resets.

Athletes we know

More time to get to know each athlete, identify areas for improvement and progressively develop their ability throughout the term.

How groups are formed

Purpose-built training groups

As part of the new structure, we're putting greater emphasis on how our GRIT training groups are formed. Where possible, athletes are grouped based on a combination of:

Age & physical development

Athletes train alongside peers at a similar stage of growth and maturity.

Sport & positional demands

Sessions reflect the movements and demands of each athlete's sport.

Ability & training experience

Current ability and time in training shape the level of each session.

Athletic needs & development areas

Coaching targets the areas where each athlete has the most to gain.

Attitude, effort & training maturity

We place athletes together who complement and challenge each other.

The right environment

Sessions offer the appropriate level of challenge, competition and progression for every group.

While athletes may play different sports, our aim is not simply to fill groups — it's to create the best possible training environment for every GRIT athlete.

Missed a session?

Where a session is missed, we’ll do our best to provide a make-up session within another suitable GRIT group. Because groups are carefully structured around age, sport, ability, training experience and attitude, make-ups are subject to availability and the suitability of another group — but we’ll always make a genuine effort to accommodate athletes where possible.

What GRIT stands for

Genuine athletic development

GRIT will continue to focus on genuine athletic development — but GRIT is also about more than physical development. We want our athletes to learn how to work hard, compete, listen, respond to coaching, challenge themselves and train with purpose.

The next stage of GRIT starts this term

We believe moving to a full-term structure and creating more purposefully selected training groups is the next step in continuing to improve the GRIT program — and the experience we provide for every young athlete.
